Hughes Collective is pleased to present an exciting opportunity on behalf of our client.

Position Title: Mechanic (Journeyman) Transit

Location: Saskatoon, SK

Reporting to: Mechanical Shop Supervisor

Schedule: Shift work, 40 hours, including weekends and holidays

Our Client

The Client is one of Canada’s fastest-growing urban centres, known for its strong sense of community, forward-thinking infrastructure, and commitment to building a sustainable future. At the heart of the city’s operations is a focus on delivering essential services that enhance quality of life for residents while supporting long-term growth and environmental responsibility.

The Transportation and Construction Department plays a vital role in connecting people across the city every day. With a network of routes serving all corners of Saskatoon, the system provides safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible transportation, helping residents access work, education, healthcare, and community life.

More than just a transit system, our client is an evolving service driven by innovation and continuous improvement. From expanding service networks to integrating new technologies and advancing toward cleaner, more sustainable fleets, the team is focused on meeting the needs of a growing city while reducing environmental impact.

The Opportunity

Before the city wakes up, the work has already begun.

Buses are lined up in the yard. Some are ready to roll. Others are waiting for attention, an engine that needs diagnosing, a system that needs recalibration, a safety check that can’t be missed. Every one of them represents a route, a schedule, and hundreds of people depending on it.

This is where you come in.

As a Mechanic (Journeyman) Transit with our client, your work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is seen across the entire city. You’re the one ensuring that vehicles leave the shop safe, reliable, and ready for the day ahead. You’re solving problems that don’t come with a manual, using your experience and instincts to keep things moving when it matters most.

Some days, you’ll be deep in diagnostics, tracking down complex mechanical issues and getting to the root of the problem. Other days, you’ll be focused on preventative maintenance, catching issues before they ever reach the road. You might move from working on a bus in the bay to inspecting shop equipment or supporting a vehicle changeover to keep service on schedule.

It’s hands-on, fast-paced, and essential work. The kind where no two days look the same, but every day, you know exactly why it matters.

Key Responsibilities

As a Mechanic (Journeyman) Transit, you will work collaboratively and are responsible for:

1. Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance

  • Make minor repair and replacement decisions aligned with preventative maintenance programs.
  • Accurately document work performed, including repairs, inspections, and vehicle condition reports.
  • Provide required data and reports to support maintenance tracking and operational planning.

3. Shop Operations & Safety

  • Use tools, equipment, and materials safely, effectively, and economically.
  • Support safe work practices and contribute to a culture of safety within the shop.
  • Participate in and support on-the-job training for maintenance staff.

4. Operational Support

  • Perform vehicle changeovers in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist with additional maintenance and operational tasks as required.
  • Collaborate with team members, other civic employees, and external partners to ensure smooth operations.
